True luxury is the absence of worry. It is the seamless integration of technology and aesthetics to create an environment where the outside world ceases to exist. The creation of E'SPA RIGA was one of the most ambitious undertakings in our studio's history. It required us to push the boundaries of technical coordination and international collaboration. This project stands as a monument to what can be achieved when a distinct architectural vision meets rigorous engineering precision.

A New Benchmark for the Baltics

The brief from our client Linstow Baltic was clear yet demanding. They sought to create a facility that would not just be the best in Latvia but a unique destination for the entire Baltic region. The scale of the project was immense with a total floor area of 3800 square meters spread across six floors.

Designing a five star SPA requires a fundamental shift in mindset. Unlike a standard office or residential project where the focus is often on efficiency or density a spa is about emotion. It is about the choreography of the senses. Every step the visitor takes must be curated. From the moment they enter the changing rooms to the moment they submerge in the pool the architecture must whisper relaxation.

Our goal was to create a public building of wellness that feels deeply private. We wanted to design a space that honors the historic character of Riga while offering a contemporary experience that rivals the best spas in London or Dubai. This ambition required a level of Architecture design that goes far beyond drawing walls and doors. It required the design of an entire atmosphere.

The Challenge of Complexity

This was a very technically complex renovation project with many parties involved from many different countries. A spa is essentially a living machine. Behind the serene stone walls and the beautiful timber cladding lies a labyrinth of pipes and ducts and pumps. The water filtration systems and air handling units and humidity controls must all work in perfect harmony.

Our role as the local architecture studio was to act as the conductor of this international orchestra. We worked alongside interior designers Douglas & Wallace Ltd from Ireland and lighting experts Lighting Design International Ltd.

The coordination effort was monumental. We had to fit massive technical equipment into the constrained spaces of a city center building. We had to ensure that the vibration from the pumps did not travel to the treatment rooms. We had to guarantee that the high humidity of the pools would not compromise the structural integrity of the historic facade. This technical rigor is the invisible foundation upon which the beauty of E'SPA RIGA rests.

Renovation and Architectural Fusion: Art Nouveau meets Modernity

The project is situated in a location that demands respect. The exterior of the building features a stunning Art Nouveau facade that is characteristic of Riga's architectural heritage. Our approach to this renovation was to preserve this historic shell while inserting a radically modern heart.

The dialogue between the old and the new is a recurring theme in our work. At E'SPA RIGA this dialogue is expressed through contrast. The exterior is ornate and classical. It speaks of the history of the city. The interior however is sleek and moody and sensual. It speaks of the future of wellness.

Upon entering the building the visitor is transported into a different world. The transition is deliberate. We wanted to create a threshold where the noise and stress of the city are left behind. The use of dark materials and dramatic lighting creates a womb-like effect. It wraps the visitor in a protective layer of shadow and warmth. This is Architecture design at its most psychological level where the space itself acts as a sedative.

The Element of Water

Water is the protagonist of any spa. At E'SPA RIGA we treated water not just as a functional element but as a sculptural material. The main swimming pool is a masterpiece of design and engineering. It is finished with black mosaic tiles that give the water a deep and ink-like quality.

The pool is surrounded by walls clad in textured gold tiles. When the underwater lights are activated the water reflects the gold and creates a shimmering and liquid effect throughout the room. This interplay of black and gold creates a sense of opulence and mystery. It transforms the simple act of swimming into a cinematic experience.

We also paid close attention to the thermal experiences. The saunas and steam rooms are designed as glass boxes that float within the space. This transparency allows for visual connectivity while maintaining thermal isolation. The use of vitality pools with integrated air jets required precise structural detailing to accommodate the complex plumbing without raising the floor levels significantly.

The Spiral of Light

One of the most iconic features of the interior is the spiral staircase. It connects the different levels of the spa and acts as the vertical spine of the project. This staircase is wrapped in a curtain of crystals that spans multiple floors.

This feature was developed in close collaboration with the lighting designers. The fiber optic cables are woven into the crystal strands. They create a cascade of light that mimics falling water. As visitors ascend or descend the stairs they are moving through this shower of light.

This element serves a dual purpose. Functionally it provides necessary illumination for the circulation space. Aesthetically it acts as a focal point that draws the eye upwards and emphasizes the verticality of the building. It is a moment of pure spectacle that celebrates the height and grandeur of the space.

Interior Atmosphere and Materiality

The interior design by Douglas & Wallace Ltd brought a rich and tactile palette to the project. Our job as architects was to ensure that these materials were applied correctly and sustainably. We worked with rich walnut veneers and purple velvet upholstery and polished stone floors.

The treatment rooms are designed as cocoons. They feature curved walls and soft lighting to eliminate harsh shadows. The geometry of these rooms is organic. We avoided sharp corners in favor of flowing lines that promote a sense of flow and ease. The relaxation room utilizes a circular layout with ergonomic loungers that face inwards. This creates a communal yet private atmosphere where guests can rest after their treatments.

The changing rooms are equally luxurious. We believe that the experience of a public building is defined by its service areas. The lockers are integrated into beautiful joinery units. The vanity areas feature theatrical lighting that flatters the face. Every detail from the door handles to the shower heads was selected to reinforce the feeling of quality.

Technical Excellence in Wellbeing

Beyond the visible luxury there is a layer of invisible technology that ensures the wellbeing of the guests. The air quality in the spa is constantly monitored and adjusted. The ventilation system is designed to be silent so as not to disturb the peace. The water quality is maintained by advanced filtration systems that reduce the need for harsh chemicals.

We also integrated a state-of-the-art fitness center on the upper levels. This area features floor to ceiling windows that offer views of the city skyline. We used high performance sound insulation in the floors and walls to ensure that the sound of dropping weights does not penetrate the meditation rooms below.

A Legacy of Collaboration

The success of E'SPA RIGA is a testament to the team that built it. Barbara Bula, Elīna Rožulapa and Jevgenijs Filipovs led the architectural effort with unwavering dedication. Worked hand in hand with partners to solve problems that seemed impossible on paper.

This project taught us that Architecture is a universal language. Despite the many different countries involved we all shared a common goal. We wanted to create a place of beauty. We wanted to create a place that improves the lives of its users.

E'SPA RIGA is more than just a spa. It is a landmark of modern luxury in the Baltics. It demonstrates that Riga is a city that can sustain world class infrastructure. For Barbara Bula Arhitekti this renovation project remains a source of immense pride.
