The modern office is a space of collaboration and identity. It is a second home for employees and a physical manifesto of the company's values. With the development of the VIADA Office Building, we have embarked on a journey to create a structure that embodies efficiency while celebrating human comfort.
This project represents a significant milestone for our architecture studio. We are tasked with transforming a 1700m² plot in Riga into a landmark that serves both the client, Petrol Property and the surrounding urban fabric. Our vision goes beyond the walls of a standard corporate headquarters.
The Evolution of Office Architecture
Our team at Barbara Bula Arhitekti understands that architecture has the power to influence corporate culture. A well-designed building can foster communication and spark innovation. It can improve the mental well-being of the people who inhabit it every day.
For the VIADA project, we focused on the idea of the "living workplace." This is a concept where the rigid boundaries between professional tasks and personal comfort are blurred. We wanted to design a building that breathes. A structure that adapts to the changing light of the day and the changing needs of the team. This philosophy guided every decision in our architectural design process. From the orientation of the facade to the layout of the break rooms, every detail was scrutinized to ensure it adds value to the user experience.
Context and Urban Integration in Riga
Located in the dynamic city of Riga, the site offers both challenges and opportunities. Riga is a city with a rich architectural heritage. Any new addition to its skyline must be respectful yet confident. The plot size of 1700m² provided us with a compact canvas. This required a smart and vertical approach to spatial planning. We did not want to overcrowd the site. Instead, we aimed to create a volume that feels light and accessible.
We view this office building not as a fortress but as a participant in the streetscape. Although it is a private facility, its presence impacts the public realm. We ensured that the ground level interacts positively with the street. By doing so, we elevate the quality of the immediate environment. This aligns with our studio's broader goal to improve the public space through private interventions. We believe that even a corporate building has a civic duty to be beautiful and welcoming from the outside.
The Architectural Concept: Transparency and Solidity
We wanted the building to project strength and stability, which are core values for a major company like VIADA. However, we also wanted to avoid the heaviness often associated with corporate blocks.
Our solution involves a sophisticated interplay of glass and solid materials. The façade is designed to maximize natural light penetration while mitigating solar heat gain. Large glazed sections create a visual connection between the interior and the exterior. This transparency demystifies the corporate activities within. It invites the outside world to glimpse the energy of the company. At the same time, solid elements provide privacy and structure to anchor the building to the ground.
The result is a timeless aesthetic that will remain relevant for decades. It is a building that looks to the future without ignoring the timeless principles of good composition.
Interior Dynamics and Human-Centric Design
The true heart of the project beats within its walls. The interior layout is where our commitment to the user becomes most visible. Led by our project team, which includes Barbara Bula, Anete Soldāne and Lūcija Vērdiņa, we developed a floor plan that encourages movement.
We moved away from long and dark corridors. Instead, we designed circulation paths that open up into communal hubs. These are spaces where employees can cross paths and share ideas. The workspaces themselves are flexible. They allow for both focused individual work and dynamic group sessions. We paid special attention to acoustics. We utilized sound-absorbing materials to create a calm acoustic environment despite the open nature of the layout.
Lighting played a crucial role in our strategy. We prioritized access to daylight for every workstation. Artificial lighting is designed to mimic natural circadian rhythms. This attention to biological needs reduces fatigue and boosts productivity. It is a prime example of how architectural design can directly impact human health.
Sustainability and Technical Excellence
The VIADA Office Building is currently in the Technical Design phase. This phase allows us to integrate advanced energy-efficient solutions. We are not just building for today. We are building for a climate-conscious future.
The building envelope is highly insulated to reduce heating and cooling demands. We have proposed smart climate control systems that adjust automatically based on occupancy and weather conditions. The choice of materials also reflects our commitment to the environment. We prioritized locally sourced and durable materials where possible to reduce the carbon footprint of construction.
Water management and ventilation systems are designed to meet the highest modern standards. We view the technical systems not as separate from the architecture but as an integral part of it. A truly beautiful building is one that functions efficiently. It respects the resources it consumes. This holistic approach ensures that the client, Petrol Property, receives a building that is economic to operate and responsible to the planet.
The Team Behind the Vision
Great projects are the result of great collaboration. The VIADA Office Building is brought to life by a dedicated team from Barbara Bula Arhitekti. The synergy between our architects is vital to the success of the project.
Barbara Bula (CEO of Barbara Bula Arhitekti) leads with a vision that unifies the aesthetic and functional goals. Together, this team works tirelessly to refine every corner of the design.
We also recognize the vital role of our client. Their trust and ambition have allowed us to push the boundaries of what a standard office building can be. It is a partnership built on a shared desire to create something exceptional.
A Philosophy of Improvement
We wanted to create a place that feels less like a factory for tasks and more like a laboratory for ideas. We wanted to create a building that gives back to the city through its visual elegance. We wanted to prove that a commercial project can have the soul of a public building.
The VIADA Office Building in Riga is a carefully crafted environment designed to elevate the quality of life for its users. It demonstrates that architecture design is a powerful tool for corporate identity and employee satisfaction.
