While our work on large scale urban projects allows us to shape the city skyline the design of a single family residence allows us to shape the daily lives of individuals. It is a process that requires deep listening and a profound understanding of human habits. The Private House in Ezerkrasti is a project that exemplifies our approach to residential design.
The Context of Ezerkrasti
The project is located in the picturesque Ezerkrasti area of the Riga district. This location is defined by its stunning natural topography and the presence of dense pine forests. When we first visited the site in the early 2000s we were struck by the vertical rhythm of the trees and the unique quality of the light. The sun here filters through the high canopy and creates a dancing pattern of shadow and brightness on the forest floor.
Our primary goal as an architecture studio was to preserve this atmosphere. We wanted to place the building within the landscape without destroying the magic of the forest. The plot offered a sense of seclusion and peace that is rare to find so close to the capital city. The client sought a retreat from the noise of urban life. They wanted a place where the architecture would serve as a backdrop to nature rather than a competitor.
Architectural Concept and Form
The volume of the house is designed as a clean and modern composition. We chose a simple geometric language that contrasts with the organic forms of the surrounding vegetation. The building is structured as a two-story volume that sits confidently on the terrain. The white plastered facade acts as a canvas for the shadows of the pine trees. As the sun moves across the sky the appearance of the house changes. It becomes a reflection of the passing time and the changing seasons.
The roofline is defined by a dark and sloping silhouette. This choice anchors the building visually and references the traditional vernacular of the region while maintaining a strictly contemporary profile. The contrast between the pristine white walls and the dark roof and window frames creates a graphic clarity. This is a hallmark of our architectural design style. We believe that clarity in form leads to clarity in living.
Blurring the Boundaries
One of the central tenets of this project was to dissolve the barrier between the interior and the exterior. We achieved this through the strategic placement of large windows. These are not merely openings for ventilation. They are frames for the living landscape outside.
In the living areas the glazing extends from floor to ceiling. This allows the residents to feel as though they are sitting in the middle of the forest even when they are comfortably indoors. We paid special attention to the corners of the building. By placing windows at the edges of the volume we opened up diagonal views that make the interior spaces feel larger and more expansive.
The relationship with the outdoors is further strengthened by the terraces and balconies. We designed these outdoor rooms to be extensions of the interior living space. A spacious balcony on the upper level provides a private perch among the tree branches. It is a place to enjoy the morning coffee or the evening sunset while listening to the wind in the pines. The metal railings are kept thin and minimal to ensure that the view remains unobstructed.
The Scale of Intimacy
The house has a total size of 300 square meters. In the world of residential design this size is a sweet spot. It is large enough to provide generous open spaces and private zones for every family member but it is small enough to remain intimate and manageable. Unlike a public building which must cater to the flow of hundreds of people a private house is about the flow of a family.
We organized the layout to prioritize connection. The ground floor is conceived as a social zone where the kitchen and dining and living areas flow into one another. This encourages interaction and creates a warm heart for the home. The upper floor is dedicated to rest. Here the bedrooms are tucked away to ensure privacy and silence. This clear zoning is essential for a harmonious domestic life.
Architecture Design and Detail
The entrance sequence is designed to be welcoming. A paved driveway leads to the garage and the main door. We utilized a dark metal fence to define the perimeter of the property. This fence provides security without creating a visual wall. It allows the forest floor to visually continue beyond the property line.
We also integrated a glass link volume that connects the main house to the garage and utility block. This transparent corridor breaks up the mass of the building. It allows light to penetrate the courtyard area and provides a glimpse of the trees behind the house as one approaches the entrance. This layering of transparency adds depth and complexity to the architectural design.
Technical Performance and Durability
Completed in 2005 this project has stood the test of time. A key responsibility of our architecture studio is to ensure that our buildings are durable. The Latvian climate can be harsh with cold winters and humid summers. We utilized high quality insulation materials and robust construction techniques to ensure thermal comfort year round.
The white render of the facade was chosen for its durability and its ability to reflect light. The roof structure is designed to handle heavy snow loads. The drainage systems are integrated to manage rainwater effectively without cluttering the facade. We believe that technical excellence is the invisible backbone of beauty. A house that functions well is a house that is loved by its owners.
A Dialogue with the Client
The success of this project is a direct result of the collaboration with the client. They trusted our vision and allowed us to create a home that is both modern and warm. We worked closely with them to understand their needs and their dreams.
Designing a private house is a personal journey. We act as guides and translators. We translate the client's abstract desires into concrete form and space. The result in Ezerkrasti is a home that fits the client like a tailored suit. It reflects their personality while carrying the signature elegance of Barbara Bula Arhitekti.
