Riga is a city defined not only by its architecture but also by its legends and its scents. Hidden within the winding cobblestone streets of the Old Town lies a concept that seeks to capture the very essence of the Latvian soul. The Balsam Boutique SPA Hotel located at Kalēju street 64/66 is an exploration of the herbal heritage that has defined wellness in this region for centuries. Our design proposal for the Mogotel Hotel Group envisions a space where the historic urban fabric meets the healing power of nature. We aimed to create an interior environment that feels like a secret garden concealed behind ancient masonry walls. This project represents a sophisticated approach to hotel design where storytelling drives every aesthetic decision.
The Concept: The Herbal Fito Theme
The central narrative of the Interior design is built around the "herbal fito theme". This concept draws inspiration from the legendary Riga Black Balsam which is an herbal elixir known for its healing properties and complex recipe of roots and flowers and oils. We wanted to translate this complexity into a spatial experience. The hotel is envisioned as a modern apothecary where guests are treated with the soothing presence of nature.
Our design strategy avoids literal interpretations. Instead of simply placing plants in a room we focused on the abstraction of botanical elements. The use of local herbs becomes a recurring motif throughout the 4000 square meter property. We integrated dried herbs into glass partitions and used botanical illustrations as wall coverings and selected textures that mimic the organic roughness of bark and leaves. This approach creates a multi sensory experience. It engages not just the eyes but also the sense of smell and touch. The goal was to evoke the feeling of entering a sanctuary where the air is fresher and the pace is slower than the busy street outside.
Color Palette and Materiality
To support the fito theme we developed a color palette that is deep and grounding. We moved away from the stark whites often found in minimalist design. Instead we embraced the rich tones of the earth. The primary colors include deep moss greens and warm ambers and dark browns that recall the clay bottles used to store the traditional balsam.
These darker tones create a sense of intimacy and luxury which is essential for a boutique hotel atmosphere. We balanced these heavy colors with sophisticated details in brass and copper. These metallic accents act like the light catching the surface of a liquid. They add a spark of elegance to the matte surfaces of the wood and stone.
The materials were chosen for their tactile qualities. We prioritized natural wood with visible grain to emphasize the connection to the forest. Velvet textiles in the upholstery add softness and comfort while rough hewn stone elements in the lobby and SPA areas provide a sense of permanence and history. This juxtaposition of rough and soft surfaces is a hallmark of our hospitality design philosophy. It creates a tension that makes the interior feel alive and dynamic.
The Lobby
The arrival experience is choreographed to be a transition from the public noise of the Old Town to the private silence of the hotel. The lobby is designed to feel like an exclusive living room rather than a transactional reception area. Upon entering the guest is greeted by the subtle scent of dried herbs and the visual warmth of the timber paneling.
We designed custom joinery units that resemble antique medicine cabinets. These units display jars of local ingredients and dried flowers and amber stones. This display serves as an educational element that introduces the guest to the natural wealth of Latvia. The lighting in the lobby is low and atmospheric. We used focused spotlights to illuminate the textures of the walls and the displays while keeping the overall ambient light soft. This creates a mood of mystery and discovery. The furniture is arranged in small clusters to encourage intimate conversation. We selected armchairs with enveloping shapes to make guests feel protected and relaxed immediately upon arrival.
Guest Rooms
The design of the guest rooms continues the herbal narrative but in a softer and more restful manner. A hotel room must primarily serve as a place of sleep and recovery. Therefore we lightened the color palette in the private quarters while maintaining the connection to the theme.
The walls feature custom designed wallpapers with subtle botanical prints. These are not loud patterns but rather delicate sketches of plants found in the Latvian meadows. The headboards are upholstered in high quality fabrics in shades of sage green or muted terracotta. We paid special attention to the lighting design in the rooms. Aside from functional reading lights we incorporated mood lighting that washes the walls in a warm glow. This allows the guest to customize the atmosphere of the room to suit their mood.
We also focused on the tactile experience of the guest. The bed linens are crisp and cool while the throws and cushions are soft and textured. The flooring is warm wood which feels pleasant underfoot. Every detail from the shape of the bedside tables to the handle on the wardrobe was selected to reinforce the feeling of a bespoke environment. This level of detailing is what elevates a standard hotel into a true boutique experience.
SPA and Wellness
Given the name Balsam Boutique SPA Hotel the wellness area is undoubtedly the heart of the project. This is where the concept of healing comes to full fruition. The Interior design of the SPA is darker and more elemental than the rest of the hotel. We wanted to create a cave like atmosphere where guests can feel completely cut off from the outside world.
We utilized dark stone tiles and slate to line the pools and the treatment rooms. The water features are illuminated from below which creates a mesmerizing play of light on the ceiling. The air in the SPA is infused with the scent of pine and mint and lavender. We designed relaxation zones with heated stone loungers and private alcoves where guests can rest in silence.
The treatment menu is conceptually linked to the interior design. We envisioned spaces specifically designed for herbal rituals and mud treatments. The design of the treatment rooms focuses on acoustic isolation and thermal comfort. We used heavy drapes and sound absorbing ceiling panels to ensure that the silence is absolute. This commitment to the sensory experience proves that Barbara Bula Arhitekti understands the operational nuances of high end wellness facilities.
Collaboration and Expertise
The development of the Balsam Boutique SPA Hotel project in 2020 was a collaborative effort driven by a shared vision. The team was led by Barbara Bula and Anete Soldāne.
Working with the client Mogotel Hotel Group allowed us to push the boundaries of conventional hotel design. They understood that in a competitive market like Riga a hotel needs a strong and unique identity. They supported our vision of a narrative driven interior. This partnership resulted in a project that is not just a collection of rooms but a cohesive story told through space and material.
Professional Insight
From a professional perspective creating a strong narrative like the herbal fito theme is crucial for the commercial success of a boutique hotel. Today travelers are looking for experiences that are authentic and memorable. They want to feel connected to the location they are visiting.
By rooting the design in the local tradition of herbal medicine and the history of Black Balsam we provide the hotel with a Unique Selling Proposition. The Interior design becomes a marketing tool. It creates "instagrammable" moments and talking points for the guests. Furthermore a cohesive design language simplifies operational decisions. When every choice is guided by the central theme it ensures that the music and the uniforms and the menu and the architecture all speak with one voice. This consistency is what builds trust and loyalty among guests.
