The task of renovating a hotel is always a delicate balance between preserving the existing identity and introducing a fresh perspective. For the Radisson Blu Hotel in Klaipeda, Lithuania our mission was to revitalize 74 guest rooms creating spaces that feel both modern and deeply connected to their location. Between 2019 and 2021 our team, Barbara Bula Arhitekti, embarked on this journey, transforming standard accommodations into sophisticated retreats that reflect the maritime spirit of Klaipeda while upholding the high standards of the Radisson Blu brand. This project stands as a testament to the power of interior design to not only refresh a space but to redefine the entire guest experience.
The Concept
Klaipeda is a city defined by its relationship with the water. The harbor, the sea and the history of trade are woven into its fabric. Our design concept for the hotel room renovation sought to bring this external context inside, but in a way that is subtle and refined rather than literal. We wanted the guest to feel the calmness of the coast from the moment they entered the room.
The color palette is the primary vehicle for this narrative. We selected a base of crisp whites and soft greys reminiscent of the northern sky and the sandy dunes. This neutral backdrop creates a sense of airiness and space which is essential for a relaxing environment. To ground the design we introduced warm wood tones in the furniture and flooring. The herringbone parquet flooring adds a touch of classic elegance and warmth underfoot referencing the traditional craftsmanship found in Baltic architecture.
Contrast and character are provided by carefully chosen accent colors. Deep ocean blues are used in the upholstery of the armchairs creating a direct visual link to the sea. This splash of color acts as an anchor in the room inviting the guest to sit and relax. Black metal details in the lighting fixtures and furniture frames add a graphic modern edge that keeps the overall look sharp and contemporary.
Art as a Window to the City
One of the most striking features of the renovated rooms is the use of large scale art. We believe that hospitality design should tell a story. In this project the story is Klaipeda itself. Above the headboard in each room we installed a prominent black and white photograph. These images depict iconic scenes from the city including the historic architecture and the port and the texture of the streets.
This artistic intervention serves multiple purposes. Firstly it creates a strong focal point that draws the eye immediately upon entering. Secondly it acts as a window to the city even if the actual view from the window is different. It creates an emotional connection between the guest and the destination. The monochrome nature of the photography ensures that it integrates seamlessly with the room color scheme adding depth without visual clutter.
Functional Elegance
A hotel room must be a masterclass in functionality. In a limited footprint it must serve as a bedroom, a workspace and a living area. Our interior design approach focused on maximizing the utility of the space without compromising on aesthetics. The layout of the 74 rooms was optimized to create a logical flow.
The workspace is designed to be both practical and stylish. We selected a desk with a clean minimalist profile, pairing it with a comfortable upholstered chair. The lighting here is specific and adjustable catering to the business traveler who needs a productive environment. The desk lamp is sleek and modern providing focused illumination.
The sleeping area is the heart of the room. The beds are dressed in high quality white linens emphasizing the feeling of cleanliness and luxury. The headboard is designed with integrated reading lights and power outlets addressing the practical needs of the modern guest who travels with multiple devices. We also paid close attention to the wardrobe and storage solutions ensuring that there is ample space for luggage and clothing while keeping the visual lines of the room clean and uncluttered.
Lighting for Creating Atmosphere
Lighting is a crucial tool in defining the mood of a space. In the Radisson Blu Klaipeda renovation we moved away from uniform flat lighting. We used a combination of ambient, task and accent lighting to create a flexible environment.
The pendant lights beside the bed are a key design element. Their conical black shades hang low creating an intimate pool of light perfect for reading or relaxing in the evening. Floor lamps with wooden legs and fabric shades add a residential touch making the room feel more like a home than a temporary stopover. The natural light from the windows is managed with heavy high quality drapes that allow for complete blackout when needed ensuring a restful sleep.
A Collaborative Success
The successful execution of this project was the result of a dedicated team effort. Led by Barbara Bula with key contributions from Katrīna Skladova and Anete Soldāne, our studio managed the complex process of renovating 74 rooms over a two-year period. This timeline spanning from 2019 to 2021 required careful coordination to minimize disruption to the hotel operations.
Barbara Bula Arhitekti team worked closely with the client Radisson Blu to ensure that every detail met their exacting brand standards while still delivering a unique and locally inspired product. This collaboration allowed us to push the boundaries of standard hotel design and create something truly special for the Klaipeda market.
