Jūrmala is a destination with feeling. It is the scent of pine trees mixed with salty air and the sound of the wind in the branches and the soft texture of the sand. When we were commissioned to design the Choice Restaurant at 33 Bulduru Avenue our primary goal was to capture this unique essence. Completed in 2022 this project represents a harmonious blend of coastal ease and urban sophistication. Our vision was to create a space that feels as light and breezy as a walk on the beach yet cozy enough to offer shelter and comfort. This project demonstrates how interior design can translate the atmosphere of a seaside town into a tangible spatial experience.
The Concept
The intention was to create a feeling of lightness and coziness of a seaside town. We wanted the restaurant to be an extension of the Jūrmala lifestyle. It needed to be a place where the boundaries between the indoors and the outdoors are soft and permeable.
Upon entering the guest is greeted by an abundance of natural light. We utilized large windows and transparent surfaces to ensure that the interior is always connected to the changing mood of the day. The layout is open and inviting. It encourages social interaction while providing pockets of privacy for more intimate gatherings. We avoided heavy partitions or dark corners. Instead, we focused on creating a fluid space where movement feels natural and unhurried. This sense of flow is essential for a relaxing dining experience. It allows the guests to leave their stress at the door and enter a state of leisure.
The Palette of the Coast
The color scheme is the foundation of the atmosphere. We selected a natural color palette supplemented with elegant seating to reflect the tones of the Baltic landscape. The walls are painted in soft whites and warm greys that mimic the colour of clouds and driftwood.
To add depth and warmth we introduced extensive wood elements. The chevron pattern wood paneling is a standout feature. It adds a layer of geometric interest and craftsmanship that references the traditional wooden architecture of Jūrmala. The warm honey tones of the timber create a cozy glow especially in the evening. We paired this wood with cool blue accents in the upholstery and the accessories. These splashes of blue recall the sea and the sky bringing a refreshing energy to the space. The contrast between the warm wood and the cool blue creates a balanced and harmonious visual environment.
Textures that Invite Touch
Barbara Bula Arhitekti believes that hospitality design must engage the sense of touch. The materials chosen for Choice Restaurant are rich in texture. We used soft velvets and smooth leathers for the seating to ensure maximum comfort. The chairs are sculptural elements that invite the guest to sit and stay for a while.
The flooring features a herringbone pattern in a light wood finish which adds a classic touch and durability. In the bar area we utilized textured tiles that catch the light and add a bit of sparkle. The contrast between the matte surfaces of the walls and the glossy finish of the tiles adds visual complexity. Every surface was selected to be pleasant to the touch and easy to maintain, ensuring that the restaurant looks pristine even during busy service hours.
Lighting for Mood
Lighting plays a pivotal role in transforming the restaurant from a bright lunch spot to an intimate dinner venue. We designed a layered lighting scheme that offers flexibility and drama.
The custom pendant lights are a key design element. They feature organic shapes and warm materials that diffuse the light softly. These fixtures act as floating sculptures that draw the eye upwards and define the different dining zones. We also integrated discreet architectural lighting to highlight the textures of the wood paneling and the artwork on the walls. The ability to dim the lights allows the staff to change the atmosphere instantly. During the day the space is filled with energized bright light suitable for afternoon lunch. In the evening the lights are lowered to create a moody and romantic setting suitable for a subtle dinner or simply a glass of champagne before an evening event.
Furniture and Functional Zoning
The furniture selection was driven by a desire for elegance and comfort. We chose chairs with curved backs that embrace the sitter. The mix of dining chairs and banquette seating offers variety and caters for different group sizes.
The banquettes are upholstered in a durable grey fabric that complements the wood tones. They provide a cozy corner for families or groups of friends. The tables are made of solid wood which adds a sense of quality and permanence. We arranged the furniture to create distinct zones without using physical barriers. There is a casual area near the entrance for a quick coffee. There is a main dining area for formal meals. There is a bar area for drinks and socializing. This zoning ensures that the restaurant can accommodate a wide range of activities simultaneously without feeling chaotic.
Art and Accessories
To further ground the design in its location we curated a selection of art that reflects the nature of Jūrmala. Large format photographs of the sea and the forest adorn the walls. These images serve as windows to the landscape even when the curtains are drawn. They remind the guest of the beauty that surrounds them.
We also incorporated greenery into the restaurant interior design. Potted plants and vases with fresh flowers bring life and oxygen into the room. They soften the architectural lines and add a pop of vibrant green that contrasts beautifully with the neutral background. The attention to detail extends to the tableware and the menu design ensuring a cohesive brand experience.
A Collaborative Success
The realization of Choice Restaurant was a team effort. Each partner brought their specific expertise to the project. This collaboration ensured that every element of the design was executed to the highest standard. The result is a space that feels bespoke and crafted. It is a testament to the power of working with skilled local artisans and suppliers.
We have successfully translated the client brief into a spatial reality. We have created a feeling of lightness and coziness that makes guests want to return time and time again. This project stands as a prime example of Barbara Bula Arhitekti ability to create interior design that is emotionally resonant and functionally superior. We invite you to step inside and experience the calm and the beauty of the seaside at Choice Restaurant.
