Old Town Riga is a labyrinth of history where every corner whispers tales of the past. However, at 8 Kalēju Street the whisper turns into a roar. The Ribs & Rock restaurant project was an electrifying opportunity for our studio to deviate from the quiet elegance often associated with heritage renovations. Completed in 2014, for our client, this venue was the second installment in the Ribs & Rock restaurant chain. The brief was deceptively simple yet creatively demanding. The client wanted a restaurant where the atmosphere of rock music is present not just in the playlist but in the very walls themselves. Our mission was to translate the rebellious spirit of rock into a cohesive interior design language that felt premium yet approachable.

The Concept

To capture the essence of rock music we looked beyond the clichés of guitars on the wall. We deconstructed the genre into its raw material components. Rock is heavy. Rock is loud. Rock is textured. Therefore, our design palette focused on materials that possess these qualities. We chose stone and metal and dark wood and distressed leather.

The 310 square meter space is conceived as a cavern of sound and taste. We wanted the guests to feel enveloped by the environment. The atmosphere is dense and moody similar to a backstage lounge or an underground club. However, unlike a dive bar every detail here is executed with precision and high-quality craftsmanship. We aimed to create a space that respects the historic shell of the Old Town building while injecting it with a modern and edgy soul. This juxtaposition of the ancient masonry with the new industrial elements creates a dynamic tension that keeps the eye moving.

The Main Stage: Bar

In any rock venue the stage is the focal point. In a restaurant that focal point is the bar. We designed the bar area to be the heart of the energy. It is a massive structure that commands attention. The counter is crafted from solid materials that can withstand the high traffic of a busy night.

Above the bar we installed a custom lighting rig that mimics the truss systems found at rock concerts. This industrial element draws the eye upward and adds a vertical dimension to the space. The lighting is adjustable, allowing the mood to shift from a bright lunch setting to a sultry evening vibe. The back bar display is designed to showcase the extensive selection of spirits. The bottles are illuminated from behind creating a glowing wall of amber and gold that contrasts with the darker finishes of the room. This area is a social hub where guests can gather and feel the pulse of the restaurant.

Seating and Zoning

Comfort is king even in a rock and roll setting. We understood that while the aesthetic might be rugged the dining experience must be luxurious. We developed a variety of seating options to cater to different group sizes and social dynamics.

The main dining area features large comfortable booths upholstered in high quality leather. The deep buttoning on the upholstery references classic car interiors and vintage guitar amplifiers. These booths provide a sense of privacy and enclosure allowing guests to have intimate conversations amidst the buzz of the restaurant. We also incorporated loose tables with sturdy chairs for more flexible arrangements.

One of the key challenges in restaurant design is zoning. We needed to break down the 310 square meters into manageable sections without losing the sense of openness. We achieved this through the strategic placement of low walls and decorative screens. These elements guide the flow of traffic and create distinct areas for dining and drinking. The result is a layout that feels organized but organic.

Art and Identity

A rock restaurant runs the risk of becoming a theme park if not handled with care. To ensure authenticity we collaborated with our partner Ginters Krumholcs. His artistic contribution was vital in defining the unique identity of Ribs & Rock.

Instead of generic memorabilia we integrated bespoke art pieces that interpret the theme through a sculptural lens. The walls feature reliefs and installations that play with the iconography of musical instruments and sound waves. These artworks are not just decorations added at the end. They are integral parts of the interior design. They emerge from the walls and interact with the lighting. This artistic layer adds a level of sophistication that elevates the restaurant above a standard themed eatery. It invites guests to look closer and discover the subtle nods to music history embedded in the architecture.

Materiality

The materials chosen for Ribs & Rock are rich in texture. We used rough hewn stone cladding on the walls to create a sense of weight and permanence. This cold hard surface is balanced by the warmth of the wood flooring and the softness of the leather seating.

We also introduced metal accents in the furniture and the lighting fixtures. The metal is finished with a patina that suggests age and use. It looks like it has been on tour. This attention to the tactile quality of the surfaces ensures that the restaurant feels lived in and authentic. It is a place where you are not afraid to touch the walls or spill a drop of beer. It is resilient and robust just like the music it celebrates.

Lighting and Acoustics

In a music themed restaurant acoustics are paramount. We had to ensure that the rock atmosphere was present without becoming overwhelming. We worked to balance the hard reflective surfaces with sound absorbing materials. The upholstered furniture and the heavy drapes help to dampen the noise levels, allowing for comfortable conversation even when the music is playing.

The restaurant's lighting design is theatrical. We used spotlights to highlight the tables and the artwork leaving the circulation spaces in shadow. This high contrast lighting creates drama and intimacy. It focuses attention on the food and the company. We also incorporated neon elements that add a vibrant pop of colour and a retro cool factor to the space. The interplay of light and shadow is crucial in establishing the rock and roll mood.

Ribs & Rock is a testament to the power of thematic design when executed with restraint and skill. It is a restaurant that wears its heart on its sleeve. It is loud and proud and full of character.
