Competition, 1st Prize
We believe architecture is about creating spaces that breathe and invite genuine connection. For us, the Limbaži City Library project was not merely a design competition. It was an opportunity to heal the urban fabric and create a true "living room" for the city where citizens of all ages can learn and socialize.
Balancing History and Modernity
Building in a historic town like Limbaži comes with a heavy responsibility. The town is defined by an intimate scale, characterized by low buildings and narrow streets. Our challenge was significant. We needed to fit a massive 6000m² program into this delicate setting while responding to the imposing Soviet-era building nearby.
We sought to interpret the traditional language of Limbaži through a modern lens, creating something that feels familiar yet refreshingly new.
A Strategic Urban Solution
Our team, led by Barbara Bula alongside architects Elīna Rožulapa and Liene Līce, resolved this clash of scales with a strategic geometric solution. We arranged the building along Rigas Street. This decision was crucial. It allowed us to respect the historic street alignment while generating a protected inner courtyard.
This courtyard is the heart of the design. It serves as a vital public space that acts as a buffer between the bustling street and the quiet library zones. It also links the urban edge to the park behind the plot, offering a venue for open-air events or a reading garden in the summer.
Light, Materiality, and Atmosphere
To anchor the building in local history, we chose brick as the primary material. However, we applied it with a modern rhythm of solid walls and large glazed openings that breaks down the façade into relatable segments. This contrast between rough brick and smooth glass highlights the library's dual nature as a place of protection and a place of openness.
Inside, the library is designed as a "landscape of knowledge". Visitors are welcomed by a spacious atrium and a sculptural staircase that encourages exploration. Natural light acts as a building material here, flooding the deep floor plan through skylights to create an uplifting atmosphere.
Sustainability Through Longevity
Barbara Bula Arhitekti team believe that true sustainability is found in longevity. Public buildings must be a prudent use of taxpayer money, so we ensured feasibility through a rational structural grid and durable materials. The building's compact shape minimizes heat loss, ensuring it serves the community for generations with minimal degradation.
Winning the 1st Prize for this project validates our belief that the best architecture is rooted in empathy. We have created a space that respects the past while embracing the future, offering a promise of a more connected Limbaži.
Why this approach is important
From a professional architectural perspective, the strategy used in the Limbaži City Library is critical because it addresses the "Crisis of Scale" often found in small European towns.
When a small town needs a large facility (like a library or cultural center), the new building often crushes the existing charm of the neighborhood because it is simply too big. This project succeeds because it uses massing breakdown. By using an L-shape and varying roof slopes, the architects hid the sheer volume of the 6000m² structure. To the pedestrian on the street, it looks like a continuation of the historic town, but it functions like a modern powerhouse inside.
Furthermore, the creation of the inner courtyard is a vital urban intervention. It transforms the library from a "destination" (where you go only to get a book) into a "thoroughfare" (a place you walk through to get to the park). This increases casual social collisions and integrates the building into the daily walking patterns of residents who might not otherwise visit a library.
